The Threats — Imminent and Ongoing The four nuclear reactors devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on the east coast of Japan in 2011 continue to pose a grave risk to people and the environment around the world. Another significant quake, for example, could damage and drain the spent fuel pools at the site. Seismologists say such an earthquake occurring in the near future is a certainty. Any further releases of radioactive materials would make the situation at Fukushima even worse. Meanwhile, 330 tons of radioactive water from Units 1, 2, and 3 continue to leak into the Pacific Ocean daily.
The Response We must continue to inform and mobilize our communities to demand that local, regional and national leadership move quickly to initiate and direct an independent, international effort to stabilize, monitor, and clean up Fukushima. The environment of the entire planet, as well as the safety and well-being of all people of every country, is at stake.
